The honey route

Sometimes a passion is inherited without knowing it. This is the story of a family tradition that, over time, became a community project full of knowledge, gentleness and commitment to nature.

Sometimes a passion is inherited without knowing it. This passion for bees, perhaps, is in my genes. More than a hundred years ago, my great-grandfather probably brought the first beehive to the province of Carchi. My father told him that his own father -my grandfather- told him how that hive was acquired in the center of the country and transported to Ibarra by railroad. From there, they brought it to Carchi by mule, since at that time there was no road for vehicles.

Since I was a teenager, I began to handle bees empirically. It was in 2009, thanks to the support of the Provincial Government of Carchi, that a group of beekeeping enthusiasts formed an association and began to receive technical training. With the basic knowledge acquired, we were able to produce a greater quantity of honey, although at the beginning it was difficult to market it.

It was then that I came up with an idea: to invite people to learn about the honey production process and all the products of the beehive. This is how the Honey Route was born, an educational and experiential experience that brings the community closer to the fascinating world of bees.s the story of a family tradition that, over time, became a community project full of knowledge, sweetness and commitment to nature.
